8 top tips to prevent boiler breakdowns all year round

February 20, 2015 | 1 Comment

So, recent research shows that a third of people living in the Leeds Area just wouldn’t know what to do if their boiler broke down. I myself have fallen foul of this in the past and seriously it’s one of the worst feelings ever knowing you could have prevented boiler breakdowns and covered yourself at a fraction of the cost of replacing the entire boiler itself.  EDF Energy have come up with 8 amazing tips and some great facts for us in the UK to digest and act on to keep our homes cosy and warm all year round. These tips are simple and super effective and I for one will be using this guide to make sure my family do not fall foul of the dreaded boiler breakdown experience again, and if we do then at least I know we have tried to combat any problems that may have been prevented.

Did you know?

An estimated 8 Million uninsured boilers leave the UK at risk of hefty repairs bills each month! and recent research shows that a third of the residents living in just the Leeds area would not know who to call if their boiler actually broke down.

To help avoid unnecessary costs and discomfort this winter, EDF Energy have pulled together some top tips to prevent boiler breakdowns. Here is a very handy infographic you can grab to ensure you always have the information to hand.

How many uninsured boiler breakdowns are there?

Plunging temperatures in the UK this month mean our boilers are more important than ever as we brace ourselves against the cold temperatures. According to new research conducted on behalf of EDF Energy, over a quarter of UK boilers have broken down without being insured, with the average cost of repair racking up a £314] bill. As a result, more than a third (36%) of people living in Leeds say that they’d have to borrow money to cover the repair cost or have no choice but to go without heating if their boiler broke down.

Also despite boilers needing to be serviced at least once a year, 5% of respondents say that their boiler has never been serviced and 17% have no idea when their last service was.

The research coincides with the launch of “EDF Energy Protect”, a new range of home emergency insurance products, provided by Intana.  The products cover everything from boilers to wiring, which gives peace of mind that you have protection against unexpected emergencies occurring within the home this winter, without hidden costs.

The research also reveals

  •         9% of people in Leeds said that they don’t actually know if their boiler is insured
  •         33% of Leeds respondents said they don’t know a registered plumber if their boiler broke down
  •         48% of Leeds residents don’t know how to check the pressure on their boiler

EDF Energy Protect means you can get protection on your boiler from £17.75 a month and better yet, it’s available to everyone, not just EDF Energy electricity or gas customers.”

With the new “EDF Energy Protect” range of insurance products, both homeowners and landlords can insure against home emergencies for less than you’d expect, whilst benefiting from:

  •         No excess on claims – unlike some other providers
  •         Unlimited call-outs up to £1,000 per claim with no charges
  •         24 hour Claims Helpline, every day of the year
  •         Same price whether you pay monthly or annually

Prices under the EDF Energy Protect range for homeowners start from as little as £1.75 per month on the “Wiring Protect” policy. To protect boilers, radiators and thermostats homeowners can choose the “Heating Protect” policy for just £17.75 per month, which includes an annual service.

Last year my boiler broke down on two separate occasions and I felt quite queesy at the thought of purchasing a new boiler, they can be so expensive. Luckily, I had cover at very least and found that help is a simple phone call away saving me time, money and the stress of having to source a boiler specialist to repair it.
