Moving Abroad With Kids? Follow These 8 Tips

April 13, 2023 | Leave a Comment

Moving abroad with kids is certainly not the easiest task. In order to make sure everything goes smoothly, a lot of preparation and planning is needed.

Alongside getting everything ready for your departure, you also have to take care of your children’s emotional needs. It’s a big change and it’s going to take a while for them to get used to their new life.

Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be such an overwhelming journey, and there are things you can do to make the process more bearable. In this article, we are going to talk about eight tips that you should follow when moving abroad with your family.

Research before anything else

When moving to a new country, you need to do thorough research before making any plans. Learn about everything from traditions, education, international life insurance, healthcare, and transportation systems well before your departure.

While you will learn a lot when you are there, it will make the transition process easier if you have some local knowledge. You’ll also be able to answer any questions your kids may have, which will ease some of their anxiety.

One great suggestion is to purchase some books to read and prepare some activities for your children about your new home. It’s a fun and interactive way for them to grow their knowledge.

Prepare and plan in advance

Moving internationally takes a very long time, and it’s not something that you can do last minute, especially with children. Alongside having all of your belongings packed, be sure that your essential travel documents, such as passports, visas, and vaccination certificates are in order.

It’s also critical to book flights and accommodations well in advance, as you can’t guarantee their availability. Giving yourselves enough time to prepare will help you avoid last-minute stress.

Get your children involved with the moving process

Understandably, it can be challenging for children to adjust to a new environment. While you might want to shelter them from what is going on, involving them in the process can be beneficial.

Start by allowing them to pick out some items to take with them and encourage them to learn about the new country’s culture and language. This will make them feel more involved and they will have an idea of what to expect upon arrival.

Keep everything positive

Children will respond to your attitude, so if you’re feeling stressed, chances are they will start to feel that way too! Remember to keep things light and fun, and remain positive (even if you are worried about something)

Attend cultural events, take day trips to family-friendly destinations, and make new friends. This will help create positive memories and is a gentle way to introduce them to the new environment.

Stay connected with family and friends

One of the toughest things about moving abroad is leaving loved ones behind. This is especially challenging for children, as their friend group can be incredibly important to them.

Make sure to plan regular calls and video chats with them to help you cope with homesickness. This will help your children feel less isolated and more connected with the family and friends they left behind. You don’t want to cut off these friendships completely as this can cause strain in your relationship.

Remember to take care of yourself

Moving anywhere new can be difficult, but you must not forget to take care of yourself too. Your well-being is just as critical, so be sure to fit some self-care into your routine.

Make sure to eat healthily, exercise, and take breaks when you need them. If you are struggling, reach out to a support group or focus on finding personal activities/hobbies that bring you joy.

Spend time learning about the new community

Every community is different and to settle into your new town, you must spend time learning about what’s around you. Visit places like clubs and cultural centers that allow you to connect with locals.

This will help you and your children acclimate and puts you in a position to make new friends. Even if you wouldn’t consider yourself a social butterfly, it’s worth getting out of your comfort zone.

Be patient (even if it’s difficult)

Lastly, during your travels, it’s typical to run into some unexpected problems. Remember that adjusting takes time, and it won’t happen overnight.

Be patient with yourself, your partner, and your children, and take the opportunity to learn from any setbacks you encounter. Everybody works through a change in their own way.

Final Words

As you probably know, moving abroad with kids can be overwhelming. However, you will see light at the end of the tunnel!

These eight tips will help you and your family navigate the ups and downs of settling into a new country. Good luck and most importantly, have fun!
