5 Design Ideas for Your Kid’s Room

April 15, 2022 | Leave a Comment

If you want to really make a kid’s room pop, you don’t have to invest in expensive or designer styles, though if you like them, go for it! Instead, work on making the room both functional and attuned to your child’s interest, in ways that won’t require that you fully redecorate for every life phase they go through in your home.

Make the Bed a Cool Focal Point Depending On Age

While you don’t want to have to buy a new bed every year to address your kid being into race cars or dinosaurs, the bed is a great way to do some inexpensive personalization. A few new print pillowcases, a new dust ruffle, or a cool canopy or bed tent can transform the look of the room while making the kid feel like a million bucks. A bigger design idea is to have older children choose a loft, bunk, or otherwise modular bed. Many kids enjoy having a little mini-room under a lofted bed or a spare spot for a cousin or friend to spend the night.

Let Children Choose a Core Color and Work From There

If you aren’t comfortable letting your kids do a full-on redecoration, a great start is to pick a favorite color and use different hues of that color to make a design structure for the room. If your child picks green, there are ways to find green curtains, area rugs, or bookshelves that can take a new coat of paint for a reasonable price, either used or new. As a child gets older, they may want to modify this structure, but by keeping it focused on a color, you won’t end up with a 12-year-old in a kid’s Room covered in, say, Teletubbies print items.

Make it Easy to “Redecorate” With Velcro and Chalkboard Paint

Another way to make the room fun to redecorate is to use modifiable elements. If you put velcro dots on the walls, children can easily post art, photos, or decals that can come back down if their tastes change. Painting a wall or door with chalkboard paint allows children to have a simple canvas for artwork, to-do lists, or just to keep blank as they get older. It also makes it easier to quickly make a room neutral if you end up choosing to sell your home at some point.

Kid’s Room – Use Organizing Cubes to Quickly and Easily Tidy Up

Few children enjoy cleaning their rooms as much as their parents like being able to navigate the floor without stepping on sharp toys. A set of metal or wooden cube shelves that have cloth organizer cubes in them can be a tidy and beautiful way to quickly clean up – in general, each cube can have a set of standard occupants, but if a quick cleanup is needed, all items can be picked up off the floor and stored out of sight in just minutes.

Kid’s Room – Consider a Soft-Stuff Corner or Other Cozy Elements

At almost any age, a kid likes having a spot to draw, read, or a snooze, so in your kid’s Room – consider soft furniture like a beanbag chair or just a bunch of fluffy pillows and blankets that can be billed as “fort supplies” for when their friends or siblings visit. If kids need to decompress after a big day, this space can become their spot for refuge!
