Affordable Home Extension Ideas For Anyone On A Budget

August 12, 2021 | Leave a Comment

Generally speaking, people appreciate having extra space in their homes. While people mightn’t want dozens of unused rooms, there is a sweet spot that many people would enjoy. More than they have, but enough to suit their needs. Naturally, a home extension is an ideal way of getting this.

As obvious as this is, it’s something that many people mightn’t be able to afford. That’s driven by the high costs associated with many home renovations and extensions. If you’re not able to increase your mortgage payment but want to make your home bigger, you could be at a loss of what to do.

Thankfully, there are multiple budget-friendly home extension ideas that you can try. Though you’ll still have to save a little bit for them, they could be more affordable than you’d think.

Budget-Friendly Home Extension Ideas

Add A Porch

Depending on where you live, a porch can be an ideal extension to your home. If you have a lot of outdoor space and some fantastic views to admire, then why not do so? These can be much more affordable than you’d imagine.

Most of this revolves around the materials you use in the project. Wood is often the most popular option for this, which makes it one of the more expensive. If you choose a wood-look alternative, however, you can cut down on much of the cost.

The porch also doesn’t need to be large. You can instead install one in a strategic location. Try adding one to the exterior of your living room and adding a door between them. Before you know it, you’ve opened up the living space while adding a nice area to enjoy your surroundings.

Change Up The Garage

If you have a garage, then there are multiple options for renovations. An extra bedroom could be one of the more obvious. That isn’t the only option here, however. A home gym, office, or even an additional living room could all be installed here.

Making the change doesn’t have to cost a lot. Instead, you’ll simply need to convert the garage door into a wall and add some insulation and concrete garage floor. Depending on what kind of room you want to turn it into, you’ll then need to add some furniture and decorations. All-in-all, it could be more cost-effective than you’d previously thought.

While that does mean moving your car outside, it could be a much more plausible option if your driveway is large enough to park your vehicle on.

Be In Touch With Nature In A Garden Room

Adding a patio to your home isn’t the only way to enjoy the outdoors with an extension. Garden rooms have become much more popular in recent years, thanks to more people wanting to get in touch with nature.

Since the room will revolve around bringing the outside in, you wouldn’t need to worry much about adding a lot to the room. While you’ll still need electrical work, among other things, these could be relatively minimal.

That will result in a much lower bill once the entire renovation is done. Glass walls and a glass roof might also be recommended, as it lets more natural light in. That not only benefits the natural elements of the room, but needs less actual materials and supplies, further reducing costs.

If you’re a fan of the outdoors, then this might be the best-recommended option for you.

Home Extension ideas – Consider A Loft Conversion

Your garage isn’t the only part of your home that you can convert. If you have quite a high roof, then you can consider a loft conversion. Since the main structure is already in place, you’ll save on labor costs from the get-go. You’ll also need much fewer materials and supplies, which is another cost-saving method.

Like your garage, there are quite a few conversions you can do with your loft. The most common of these are bedrooms and extra living spaces, alongside a bathroom. These will depend on how much space you have available with your loft, however.

Getting a professional in can help you determine what’s possible. When they’re doing so, they’ll also provide you with a rough quote of the costs. Compared to adding a physical extension to your home, this method increases living space with fewer associated costs.

How To Reduce Home Extension Costs

It’s one thing to know what the most affordable home extension ideas are. Being able to pay for them, however, is another. As cost-effective as the above might be, they could still be somewhat outside of your budget.

If that’s the case, you might write them off as impossible. You could try some different ways to reduce your home extension costs. You mightn’t have considered this as an option. If you have, you mightn’t know how to reduce your home extension costs.

As long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort, there are several ways that you can do so. These shouldn’t be as complicated as you’d think.

Have A Simple Design

When it comes to home extension costs, complexity drives everything up. The more you add to your home, then the more you’ll have to pay for. There are quite a few ways that this can be seen. The shape of the extension could be one of the more surprising.

Square and rectangular designs are the most affordable, as they’re the easiest to build. It’s recommended that you choose one of these and avoid any complex shapes. The more complex the design, the more labor hours are needed to complete it.

Since labor can be one of your largest costs, it’s worth minimizing it as much as possible. By keeping your design simple, you’ll do that. That’s also the case with the features included in your extension. The less of these you have, the less you’ll have to pay.

It’s worth keeping things to the basics, with a few flourishes to give things a personal touch.

Home Extension ideas – Keep To Your Plan

Once you have your renovation design finalized and a plan in place, you should stick to it. If you change your mind, then you could delay the project. These delays will then result in extra labor hours, which is an extra expense. You’ll want to avoid this as much as possible.

That isn’t the only way that changing your mind can affect the cost. Supplies and materials may already have been bought. If you choose an alternative path, then you’ll have to buy more. In some cases, you can return the supplies you haven’t used for a discount on the newer materials.

That wouldn’t be an option in quite a few circumstances, which means that you’ll lose money on it. Sticking to your plan as closely as possible is the only way to avoid this. While mistakes can still happen, these will be minimal and shouldn’t affect your budget too much.

Be The Project Manager

Every construction project, regardless of how small it is, needs a manager. These project managers will typically take up between 15% and 25% of your budget. That’s because managing the logistics of your renovation can take a significant amount of time.

Save yourself on these costs by being your own project manager. As easy as this sounds, you’ll need to prepare for a lot of work. You’ll be responsible for hiring electricians and other tradespeople, buying and having supplies delivered, coordinating with local authorities, and much more.

If you’re able to juggle multiple tasks at any given time, alongside your non-renovation responsibilities, things will go smoothly. That will also take up a lot of your time, so be prepared for some sleepless nights.

Do Some Of The Simple Tasks

If you don’t think you can handle being a project manager for your home renovation, that doesn’t mean that you can’t be hands-on. Taking care of the smaller tasks yourself can still save you some money without the need of overseeing a lot of people.

You could take care of the decorating yourself, for example. If you’re planning on the extension being painted, then you should do it yourself. Though these seem quite minor, they’ll cut down significantly on the number of labor hours needed for your project.

Depending on how much your contractors are charging, that could be a much larger saving than you’d expect. Installing the fixtures around your home, such as lights, kitchen and bathroom features, among others, will also help you save money in this way.

While it could take you longer to do than professionals, the cost savings will be more than worth it.

Affordable home extension ideas don’t need to be challenging to do. With proper planning and quite a bit of effort, you can make them much more budget-friendly than you’d expect. With that, you’ll have much more space in your home.

There are quite a few benefits to this, such as more privacy for you and your family. If you’ve been putting off your home extension because of your budget, then you might want to sit down and rework things.

While you might have to save up for a little longer, you could add to your home much faster than you’d think.
