Is Your Home A Little Sunlight Deprived

July 31, 2021 | 1 Comment

Natural light is a vital consideration. When the sun is out, then it’s so much more refreshing, invigorating, and naturally stress-busting than any configuration of interior lighting. However, you might not have the biggest or the best-placed windows and perhaps you’re thinking “how do I get more natural light into my home?” We’re going to look at a few options to allow more natural light in, as well as how to make better use of it in the home.

Redress your windows

The first and easiest tip is to change how you’re dressing your windows. The light comes in through the windows but your choice of curtains or shades might prevent that light from getting into the home proper. Sheer curtains let in more light while preserving some privacy, but options like window shutters can be opened entirely to let in the maximum amount of light possible. Similarly, you don’t want to clutter the interior window sill with too much that will block the light.

Is your Home A Little Sunlight Deprived – Take it from the top

Adding a new window to the walls of the home might not be very easy. In fact, if your room is on the top floor, then it might be a lot easier to add it to the top, instead. If you have a suitable home shape, then flat roof skylights can be installed to allow light to come in directly from the top, giving you light throughout the majority of the day.

Is your Home A Little Sunlight Deprived -Rethink your wall space

Rather than getting more light into the home, you can also help it travel further through the home. One way to do that is to make the home a little more open plan. This can include installing interior glass doors or, if you have the budget, even knowing down walls or installing glass block walls. That way, the sun can shine in through two ends of the home and, without too many walls blocking the way, light up a lot more of the rooms inside.

Use the right colours

A change in colour scheme can also be a big change in how the room is lit.  There are many ways that lighting can affect the wall colours to paint them a different shade and also how paint can affect how light moves through the room, with darker colours tending to absorb more light, while lighter colours reflect more of it.

Is your Home A Little Sunlight Deprived – Get reflective

If lighter colours can help the natural light travel around a room better due to their reflective qualities, then imagine what actual reflective surfaces can do. Using mirrors to bounce light around the room is the best and easiest example of this, but even cleaner and glossier surfaces, like vinyl flooring or marble countertops, can add some reflective power to the room and help bounce light around.

Natural light can help your home shine, and hopefully, the tips above show you a few ways to get more of it. There are options for every budget, so find those that work best for you.
