Family Staycation Ideas for the Summer Holidays

August 10, 2022 | Leave a Comment

The summer holidays have long since begun – but even within a few days of having your children back at home, the need for a holiday becomes readily apparent. International holidays, fun as they can be, are a no-go at short notice, especially with the chaos being experienced at airports in recent weeks. But the domestic holiday, or staycation, remains a strong option.

Staycations are inexpensive and often just as fun, allowing you and your family to explore the best that Britain has to offer. If you’re struggling for inspiration, and desperate to get your kids out of the house, why not try one of the following ideas for a perfect family staycation?

Family Staycation – Chester Zoo

A trip to the zoo is a quintessential family outing, being an educational opportunity for both the little ones and the adults – as well as a chance to see some rare and beautiful creatures up close. Extra points if one of you is licked by a giraffe. Chester Zoo is up there as one of the best zoos in Europe, having pioneered ‘open enclosure’ architecture that allows unparalleled access to some of the world’s most majestic animals.
Chester Zoo is also incredible value for money, being very easy to get to and with reasonable rates for families. In all, Chester Zoo is an unforgettable experience, and will naturally be a highlight of your children’s summer holiday escapades.

Family Staycation – Windsor Castle

London is an adventure in and of itself for those that live beyond its bounds. It is a sprawling urban playground with thousands of attractions and activities to discover, and well worth consideration for an extended city break overall. But some family-friendly landmarks in London and just beyond its inner limits practically beg for a family visit. There is even a Premier Inn NHS discount you can use to further your savings if you or your spouse work in healthcare

Windsor Castle is one of those landmarks. Situated a mere 20 miles from London’s central district, Windsor Castle is a royal residence with real pedigree. A direct train from Waterloo will whisk you into a world of regal splendour and key English heritage, as the 900-year-old castle opens its doors to you and your children.

Family Staycation – Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a prehistoric landmark mired in mystery. It is one of the most recognisable attractions in the UK, its trademark stone structures represent remarkable feats of human engineering, well before the establishment of modern ivilisation.

Stonehenge’s purpose has been the subject of much scientific debate over the last 100 years, with experts theorising the stone circle was everything from a place of healing to an astronomical observatory. All the more enduring, then, is the mythos of these seemingly-impossible stones – making them the perfect destination for an adventurous family with intrepid children!
