Whether it’s the height of summer or the depths of winter, the allure of a hot tub is almost irresistible. But are they safe for kids to use? Should you use one when you’re expecting? Here are some safety tips to help you and your family to get the most out of your experience.
Age restrictions
A hot tub is a fun and relaxing place to be, especially for adults. No law says kids can’t join in, but doctors and manufacturers agree that it’s best if children under the age of 5 do not use them. Babies and toddlers have thinner skin than children over 5, so they are more susceptible to overheating and more sensitive to the hot tub’s cleaning chemicals.
If children over the age of 5 want to enjoy the hot tub, it is recommended that the temperature be lowered to 35°C and soaking time be limited to 10 minutes. This is due to increased risks of overheating and dehydration. The same guidelines also apply if you’re pregnant, especially in the first trimester.
Children should also be supervised when using hot tubs as they are a drowning risk to your child as any other body of water, so make sure a responsible adult is watching them at all times.
Use a hot tub cover
When it’s not in use, keep it covered. You can get covers with childproof locks or locking straps – remember to keep the keys hidden from the kids!
Depending on the placement, you could even set up railings around it to ensure nobody can get in when they’re not supposed to.
Be sure to keep cables and hoses carefully tucked away and any electrical outlets covered to avoid accidents.
It’s also a good idea to keep the cleaning chemicals stored away, safely out of the reach of children. In their undiluted state, they’re very dangerous for kids and adults alike.
Talk about safety
Clear communication and firm boundaries are essential for keeping children safe. If you want to install a hot tub in your home, setting well-defined rules and expectations will help your kids to stay safe around the hot tub.
Some basic hot tub safety rules include:
- No running near or around it, just like at the local pool
- No submerging their head inside
- Avoid suction covers and drains
- Keep the water at a safe temperature
- Get out to cool down every so often
- Don’t use it without an adult present
- Don’t spend too long in the hot tub
A hot tub is a great addition to a home. Used safely and carefully, the whole family can enjoy it, including the kids.
