Letter Jam is a word game that is a bit complicated but more fun than other games. It allows up to six players to play and takes roughly 45 minutes to end one game.
You do not need extra items like papers, boards, etc., to play it. You only need a pen or pencil along with the game components. You can also add more rules and notions to make the game more fun.
In this article, I’ll tell you the basics of this game, and then you can decide if you need to buy it.
Here is how to play this game.
Setup Process
- Start by placing all base components like wildcards and numbered tokens on a board or flat surface of your choice,
- Place one of the setup cards in the center, which must match the number of players participating. Now, place the clue tokens according to the colored dots of the setup card,
- Shuffle the letter cards and distribute them. Everyone has to make a 5-letter word for the player sitting to their right side,
- After all the players write a 5-letter word, discard all other cards so that everybody now will only have a 5-letter card in their hands,
- Now, everybody will pass their card to the player to their right without looking at the words written on them,
- Now, make a central deck using the cards you discarded moments ago,
- Every player will place their 5-letter word card face down in front of them,
- Now, place the leftmost card in one of the plastic stands that come with the game in a way that no player can see their letters,
- Take a guessing sheet and pencil to write letters in a way so that others can not see them,
- You can only play with six stands, so if you do not have enough players, you can make dummy players and give them a green token and random cards.
Gameplay
Gameplay is where your creativity and knowledge of words matter. It is also the most crucial phase of the game if you want to finish it early. You need to learn and use new words to finish this game quickly.
You can do it by using online tools like word finder or creator, unscramble words, etc. These tools also allow you to search for new words according to their character length. For instance, you can search for a five or seven-letter word and get all the possible words that meet this criterion.
Here are some basics of the gameplay.
- All players can see one letter in every card except their at the starting of a new round,
- Think of a word you can make using the letters you can see,
- Now, discuss the potential clues without giving any information regarding other players’ letters,
- After giving your first clue, pick a red clue token,
- The clue-giver will spell the clue, and the first player marks the first letter, the second one marks the second, and so on,
- If your letter is in the clue, write it on the guessing sheet that came with the game and put a question mark in place of your unknown letter,
- Guess your letter and write it down,
- Tip the sheet down if you are sure about the letter. Record it in the box at the bottom of the guessing sheet,
- Everyone can move on now if they are sure about the letters. The players who decide to move on will return the card to their rows. The important rule here is that they can not look at them,
- The players who decide to move on will get new letters. After returning a letter to your row, you will also need to move your stand one space right and give the next letter to it,
- Progress from left to right, and return all numbered tokens to the center once players start taking new letters,
- The game ends when you end a round with zero clues for the next one.
