Tips To Help Strengthen Your Roofing For Energy Efficiency

March 21, 2023 | Leave a Comment

The roof of your home is critical to your property’s health. It’s the point at which a lot of heat can be contained or lost depending on how energy efficient it is. We don’t tend to pay much attention as homeowners to our roofing as we should. It’s one of those parts of the home, that’s out of sight and out of mind until something happens that makes us take notice.

From leaks in the ceiling to sounds of wildlife who’ve made a home in your attic space, this is the point at which we take notice of the roof itself. Strengthening your roofing can help not only for peace of mind but also for improving the efficiency of your energy.

With that being said, if it’s been a while since you’ve paid any attention to your roofing and you’ve owned the property for over a decade or so, then you may want to look at ways to strengthen it. Here are some helpful tips to enhance your roof for energy efficiency.

Energy Efficiency – Get your roofing checked annually

Getting your roofing checked annually is like getting your boiler checked every year. It’s important that you’re ensuring it’s well looked after and that any underlying problems are found sooner than later.

As most homeowners will be unable to see their rooftops from above, the only access they may have is through their attic space. It’s not always noticeable when something is wrong with your roofing here either. It’s something that may need expert advice and an eye for spotting issues within the roof itself.

That’s why it’s good to bring in a roofing expert to take a look at your roof every year or so. Annual visits may be a little overkill unless you tend to get a lot of bad weather throughout the year. However, if you’re getting it looked at every few years, then it will help to spot any problems within the roof itself.

If you want your roof to be thoroughly inspected by experts and if you’re looking for someone who can repair your roof, check them out here.

Look at installing more insulation

Insulation is handy to have in abundance when it comes to keeping your home warm and more importantly, energy efficient. While insulation may be costly to some, it can be affordable if enough research has been done.

If you’re looking for budget-friendly insulation, then you should consider low-cost Bitumen Roof Sheets. These sheets offer plenty of insulation and as an option for insulating the home, they’re extremely affordable.

Choose the right colour for roof replacements

The colour of your roof makes a difference in how well it insulates the heat in your home. If you’re opting for a roof replacement and it’s required for your roofing then try to pick a darker colour. Not only is it helpful to keep the heat in but dark colours like black or grey are going to be helpful in drawing in the heat from the sun.

This is great for helping your home generate some organic heat without having to pay for it! This is why it’s also important to keep your roofing clean so that it continues to perform well for years to come.

Opt for darker colours where possible, especially if you’re not fussed with what colour you want for your new roofing.

Energy Efficiency – Improve ventilation in your roofing

Ventilation is something you want to improve when it comes to your roofing. By having great ventilation it helps prevent the nasties like condensation, mould and rot. Tackling mould and rot especially can be problematic and costly, to say the least.

Great ventilation will help ensure the roof lasts for a long time and will prevent the indoor temperature from reaching extreme levels. From an energy efficiency point-of-view, ventilating your roof properly will help with cooling the property down so you’re not having to use any fans or air conditioning units.

While air conditioning units aren’t that common here in the UK, the summer can get particularly hot at times and so having good ventilation will reduce the number of sleepless nights you have.

Prevent any wildlife from getting onto it

There is a lot of wildlife out there that would like to make your home, their home. All types of pests can find a way of getting into your home and it’s important to try and make your property a fortress to prevent them from making themselves comfortable without your permission.

With that being said, look at cutting back any trees that hang close by or over your home. The same with any high fencing or bushes, make sure they’re far back from your property’s roof.

Roofing can be easier for many types of wildlife to make a home on the roof itself, inside the roof and in your attic. Not only that but they may nest on your gutters too, which causes problems.

By preventing them from landing on your roof in the first place, you’ll be able to avoid all the problems that come with it when trying to remove them.

Energy Efficiency – Install solar panels

Solar panels are a great way to add an extra layer of defence to your roof and they’re also good for energy efficiency. Not only will they help protect your roof further but solar panels have become much more popular in recent years for reducing energy usage in the home.

They used to be more expensive to buy and install but since they’ve grown in popularity, they’ve become more accessible. Having these fitted could save you a lot of money in strengthening your roof!

Fix any roofing problems quickly

Fixing roofing problems is something that you’ll want to be on top of, especially as it can get costly if you’re ignoring the issues. If you spot a roofing problem externally or while you’re clearing out your attic space, get the experts out quickly. The sooner an underlying problem is fixed, the more you’ll save on costly repairs.

Strengthening your roof is something that’s worthwhile for the value and performance of your home. Not only that but the efficiency in energy is a lot better with a solid roof in place!
