5 Packing Tips for Cold-Weather Trips

December 24, 2022 | Leave a Comment

When searching for the perfect winter vacation destination, most people look for places that are known for their warm climates and sandy beaches. However, planning a trip to a cold-weather destination can also be just as exciting as having some fun under the sun. Snowy escapes are great for enjoying activities like ice skating, skiing, sledding, and snowboarding. They also have the perfect climate that makes simple pleasures, like drinking hot cocoa and sitting by a bonfire, more special. What’s more, you get to live your winter wonderland dreams during the entirety of your trip. To ensure that you enjoy your trip without being bothered by the cold, you’ll need to pay extra attention to how you pack.

Packing for a winter trip can be a challenge since you need to bring a lot of clothes, footwear, and other essentials that can keep you warm. Many of these items are often made from bulky materials, so they take up a lot of space in your luggage. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to make sure you’re comfortably dressed without having to stress over the things you’ll be packing. Here are 5 tips that can help you with your winter packing woes:

Packing Tips – Avoid Going Big on Bag Sizes

One way to help you pack less during your trip is to use the right-sized bag. Having a large suitcase will tempt you to take more items than necessary, so downsizing to something more practical will ensure that you’ll only bring the things you need. Of course, the size of your bag will depend on the duration of your vacation. If you’ll be on vacation for a week or less, then a small- or medium-sized suitcase will do. You can also opt for a 40- to 45-liter backpack if you’ll be moving a lot during your trip.

Pack Light

Due to the destination’s freezing climate, you might think that you need to pack a lot of thick winter clothes to make it through your trip. However, there are a lot of cold-weather clothes that are made from light materials and can keep you sufficiently warm. For example, you can shop leggings that are lined with fleece, so your legs can stay cozy all day long. You can also bring a compressible, puffy, insulated down jacket instead of a thick coat to save on precious luggage space.

Packing Tips – Wear Your Bulky Clothing on the Plane

If you have to bring bulky and heavy clothes, it’s better to wear them on the plane to and from the destination. This way, you’ll have more space in your suitcase or backpack. Wearing your biggest and heaviest clothes on the plane ride also reduces the weight of your luggage, so you don’t have to worry about paying for excess baggage.

Invest in Compression Bags or Packing Cubes

Keeping your luggage well organized is crucial to packing light. It also ensures that you know where all your stuff is in your suitcase, so you don’t have to frantically rummage through your belongings and wrinkle your clothing while looking for something. If being neat isn’t your forte and you haven’t yet mastered the art of packing, investing in compression bags and packing cubes will make organization a lot easier.

Compression bags are designed to compress bulky items like thick sweaters and jackets to help you save space in your suitcase. They usually come in sets that feature resealable bags and an air pump that removes the air from the bags to create vacuum seals. One downside to compression bags, however, is that they can wrinkle your clothes. As a result, they’re best used for when you want to pack bulky and crease-resistant clothes like knits for your trip. Packing cubes, on the other hand, are bag organizers that allow you to create multiple, contained piles. They’re perfect for compartmentalizing your clothes and other items, so each of your things has a designated place in your luggage. When buying packing cubes, it’s a good idea to get a set that includes bags in different sizes for better organization.

Rent Winter Sports Equipment Instead

If you love winter sports, then snowy destinations are the perfect places to spend your vacation. The snow and ice offer the rare opportunity to enjoy seasonal activities like skiing and snowboarding. However, these require specialized sports gear, which can take up a lot of valuable luggage space. To avoid being encumbered and paying for the extra luggage, it’s better to rent winter sports clothing and equipment when you get to your destination. If you’ve booked a room at a ski resort, it’s likely that they offer rentals for various winter-related activities. Renting also offers you the benefit of not having to maintain equipment yourself, as these items can deteriorate if they are simply left in storage. Going on a winter vacation is definitely one of the best ways to enjoy the cold weather. While you will need to bring our warmest clothes, this doesn’t necessarily mean filling your suitcase with bulky garments and needing to pay extra for your luggage fees. With some smart packing tips, you can rest easy knowing that you’ll have all the things you need to stay cozy without being overwhelmed and overloaded by your baggage.
