Brotherband Chronicles Review – Books for Teens

July 15, 2015 | 4 Comments

Now, one of my son’s greatest loves is reading. He loves books from most genres, preferring books for 10+ years and especially books that teens will read! However, today my son has written this post about a series he recently procured which had him spellbound with each and every turn of the page!

This series of books are called Brotherband By John Flanagan. This blog post tells you what he thought about the book series called Brotherband Chronicles and what you should expect.

The Brotherband Storyline!

Brotherband is set in the world of Flanagans original book series, Ranger’s apprentice, and takes place in Skandia, a northern Viking like country who, until signing a peace treaty, raided the ocean towns across the continent.

They have a heavy focus on Ships and the Sea, undergoing a coming of age called the brotherband where a group of usually 10 boys operate a ship and maintain living, working and assessments, with the winner guarding their greatest treasure, the Andomal!

The story follows Hal, a half araluen ( the country where Ranger’s Apprentice takes place) half skandian who lost his father at a young age and became friends with the drunk champion Thorn, who lost his hand and Stig, a outcasted boy due to his Father’s desertion.

Hal is made the leader (or skirl) of a ragtag band of misfits within the community using the Ship Hal created, the Heron, which is also there brothersband’s name, which is the first to have a triangular and not square sail, affecting a large part of the story and being the cause of many victories along with their oversized crossbow, ‘the Mangler’, made in book 2.

Through Hal’s naturalistic skill at the helm and leadership skills, the gather and become the underdogs! However, when a lone ‘trader’ piloted by the Pirate Zavac, known as the Raven, docks in Skandia, a group of boy’s guarding their prized treasure may not be enough…

Brotherband is the tale of eight misfit boy’s and the friends and enemies they make along the way, spanning currently five books, and how they grow as teammates and friends! With intense battles played in the Imagination on the great blue, suspense is around every corner and has been one of my favourite books in a long time.

Featuring a lovable cast and moments where you truly connect with the characters, I was gripped through the whole voyage and if I have finished It’s final book, I will truly miss it.

The stories are fast-moving and exciting. There’s lots of action, fighting, intrigue and humour too, a fantastic series of Books for teens to read.

  1. Brotherband Chronicles: The Outcasts: Book One
  2. Brotherband Chronicles: The Invaders: Book Two
  3. Brotherband Chronicles: The Hunters: Book Three
  4. Brotherband Chronicles: Slaves of Socorro: Book Four
  5. Brotherband Chronicles: Scorpion Mountain: Book Five

I will also add the fact. I’ve been reading Ranger’s Apprentice by Flanigan which I have been loving, however I believe I won’t find a hidden gem like this for a long time to come…

Brotherband Book Review teen reading the books

I thoroughly enjoyed these fantastic books, with the entire series available in the library. I would highly recommend this series to anyone!

There are some key sailing phrases which are explained at the start of each issue to add to the authenticity and I hope anyone who picks this up finds the amazing journey I did!

Thanks for reading and please post any books you’ve been reading in the comments below and read on everyone!

Thanks! My son does better reviews than me, I might have to hire him over the summer and pay him in Skylanders and books!
