Diving Into Whether Or Not A Swimming Pool Is Worth The Space In Your Yard

August 10, 2024 | Leave a Comment

A Swimming pool is a backyard staple across much of the US and, if you don’t have a pool right now, you wouldn’t be alone in considering installing one. These additions can look like a lot of fun, for a family, they can seem ideal. Unfortunately, swimming pools can also set you back by as much as $30,000 if you aren’t careful. Swimming pools that require large amounts of space also have a habit of taking over your outdoor area altogether.

Before rushing into installation, ask yourself one pressing question – is a swimming pool worth the space? For some families, the answer will be a resounding yes. For others, a swimming pool might not be so ideal. Work out what side of the fence you fall on by considering the following essential factors.

Take Check of Local Temperatures

To make sure a swimming pool would be worth your while, you’ll want to make sure it would get plenty of use. You’re far more likely to achieve this goal if you live in a southern location like London, which is much more likely to enjoy higher temperatures that buy you ample time in the pool.

Unfortunately, it might not be such a good goal if you live somewhere in the north of the country where notoriously hard winter seasons are far more common. In this case, you may only use your pool for a few months or less each year, meaning you’re probably better off saving the money and dedicating your outdoor space to something else, like year-round planting projects or the introduction of garden toys that are more likely to prove useful.

Consider Local Facilities

It’s also worth considering what pool facilities are local to you. If you have high-quality lidos and indoor pools nearby, you may find it better to save your yard for other purposes. After all, local pools will offer everything you could get at home for half the price, while still allowing you to keep your yard intact. Local facilities also have the benefit of taking care of things like swimming pool maintenance so that you don’t have to.

Alternatively, if your nearest local pool takes an hour or longer to reach, it may be worthwhile installing your own at home. This is especially true if you have young kids, who can benefit from regular swimming practice in various ways.

Understand How Your Family Spends Time Outdoors

Before getting a pool, it’s also worth considering how your family enjoys spending time outdoors. If you all like lounging or playing in a paddling pool, a swimming pool setup could be ideal for meeting your needs. However, if your family enjoys planting, playing sports, or generally exploring outdoor wildlife, a pool could be more of a hindrance than an enhancement in your yard.

Takeaway

Is a pool right for every home? No. Introducing a swimming pool is a major cost and space commitment that you’ll need to think hard about before going ahead. Decide whether a swimming pool is right for you and your family once and for all by considering these simple pointers.
