How to keep your children entertained on a long train journey

November 28, 2022 | Leave a Comment

Achieving a smooth train journey can be hard work, especially when you have children to entertain. In the following guide, we’ll go through a few ideas for activities to try with children or as a couple to keep yourselves busy.

How can you pass the time on a train journey?

If you’re embarking on a family trip by rail, it’s essential to be prepared. Whether traveling from the coast to the inner city or looking for trains from Nottingham to Cardiff, buying the ticket is only the first step towards an easy ride.

Family activities to try on the train

We know you’ll be looking for the best ways to make a train journey speed by, so we’ve listed a few of our favourite train journey activities below.

Card games

Bringing a pack of cards could brighten up any long journey. Snap, for example, is always a family favourite and can get everyone involved, regardless of the age difference.

Travel bingo

This might take a little bit of pre-planning, but it should be worth it. Try to prepare bingo cars with 10 things you’ll be likely to see out the window – and then ask the children to tick these off one by one. This game should last for the entire ride, giving your children something to focus on.

Guessing games

Traditional guessing games like Eye Spy might be widely used, but it’s easy to see why. Since they require no prior planning or logistics, they’re a great solution to an unexpected wait – especially on a long journey.

Keep Children Entertained – Audio activities

If you and your family happily enjoy some quiet time, bringing an audiobook could be an excellent idea. Along with a pair of comfortable headphones and a travel pillow, you’ll be ready to get immersed in the narrative. Or, if you’d rather listen to music, why not share a playlist? Any Spotify user can join a group session and listen at the same time as friends and family too.

Keep Children Entertained – Getting creative

Why not try that hobby you’ve been thinking about? You could have a go at crochet or knitting, both of which can easily be tucked away in your bag when it’s time to change platforms. Sticker books work well for tiny tots, or if your children are slightly older, trying a colouring book could keep them a little bit busier.

Learning together

From mathematical puzzles to weekly homework, learning might sometimes feel like a chore – but completing tasks on the train could be an excellent opportunity to get your children engaged.

If you have older children, you could introduce them to coding. Or, if they prefer to work with humanities, they could type up a written piece on the journey.

Keep Children Entertained Final thoughts…

Of course, any activities are a bonus on long journeys. Above all, don’t forget the safety essentials for traveling with a young family. Try to pack a family first aid kit, a bottle of water for everyone, and some snacks for the way, too.
