Hyphenated first names: To hyphenate or not to hyphenate?

April 15, 2015 | 16 Comments

My Children both have hyphenated surnames, but for some parents giving their child a hyphenated first name has become extremely popular, with around 15,000 children been given a hyphenated first name each year.

Many mums and dads worry about how the name will be written, how it will be used and what it says about them. I recently wrote a post on Unique Baby names, sharing the good, the bad and the ugly baby names that some parents choose for their new bundle of joy.

Top Hyphenated first Names

The most popular hyphenated unique baby name for girls is Ellie-May, closely followed by Ellie-Mae and Lily-Mae. For the boys Tyler-James and Tommy-Lee top the list.

Using a double barreled first name can help to give old fashioned names a modern twist, like Elsie-Rose or Arthur-James, perfect for honouring grandparents or other relatives.

3,000 Hyphenated first Names and counting

There’s plenty of room for personalisation – with over 3,000 different name combinations registered the only thing that limits your choice is your imagination.

Emma’s Diary have released a very informative infographic, sharing with us the Top hyphenated first names for boys and girls. This could be a great help for anyone considering naming their baby.

What Emma’s Diary means to me. Long before the internet came along a still recall the day I collected my bounty pack from the chemist and amongst all of my baby samples was my Emma’s Diary. As I was a young mother with constant worries I felt reassured to read the diary and learn I was not alone with my pregnancy feelings.

The Diary held my hand throughout the pregnancy and through the first few months of being a new mum. Times may well have changed and with the internet has brought many ways to access help and advice.

You can access all of the baby topics help and advice you need at emmasdiary.co.uk. I get your free baby sample pack by simply registering for the samples.

This is why I trust the content and I love the fact that this wonderful Hyphenated first Names Infographic has been created to show you the most combinations of names and some of the top names used by parents right now.

choosing your newborns first names is without doubt one of the most beautiful things you will have to do. Each child is totally unique and it’s only fair to give them a first name that suits their personality.

So, Please take your time, take a deep breath and choose a truly great name for your child with the help and guidance of the below Hyphenated first-names infographic.

I actually really like hyphenated surnames – It was always seen as really posh when I was growing up! I’m not too keen on some of the combinations of first names that are hyphenated though – I used to see so many when I was making personalised cakes – 2 that really stick in my mind are Kel-Cigh (pronounced Kelsey) and Stephen-Gerrard!

I wanted to name my first son John-Luke or John-Peter. I took inspiration from the French since they have a LOT of hyphenated first names like Jean-Claude, Jean-Jacques, Jean-Luc, Jean-Paul, Jean-Pierre, Jean-Baptiste, Jean-Michel, etc. I thought it was cool how they can take a boring, plaid-out name like Jean and make it fresh again by combining it with another name. The problem is that I heard hyphenated names are difficult to have because many computer systems don’t recognize the hyphen and this can lead to problems retrieving information. So me and my wife just decided to name him Jason.

I chose Sophia-lynn Eva ( middle name) as Sophia was used after my maternal grandmother and by chance I also really likes the name Evalynn which I later found out it was my spouse’s Late maternal grandmother name, however because Evelyn was already used…I still couldn’t figure it out as I did t want the same middle name for my child but still loved name so I did a little moving around and had a beautiful origin, family honor and it’s very rare ❤️

My deceased Wife’s name was Wendy-Anne. I have always LOVED her name! It always seemed natural to me, to see her name with the Hyphen, & to call her WENDY-ANNE! So IT makes sense that it really bothered me to see it without the Hyphen! In her YOUNGer days, she worked hard to make sure the Hyphen was included in her name, Even changing her Social Security Card to have The Hyphen included in with her first names! When I first met & fell in love with my WENDY-ANNE, she would tell the tale about her name! She’d say that her Mom wanted her name HYPHENATED! Wendy-anne! But somehow, Dad did not pick up on the importance of the Hyphen TO her Mom! So when he filled out her name on the birth certificate, he did not include the Hyphen. Her Mom was very upset & hurt by the Dad not listening TO her when she TAlked about the Hyphen, & how important it was! So throughout her life, Wendy-anne who loved & respected her MOM very much, out of LOVE & respect for her mom, she usually made sure to write & HONOR her Mom’s true choice of name for HER, that being Wendy-Anne! I realize that I need to go back to referring to her as WENDY-ANNE again too! I’m realizing that it Does get quicker & easier to use just the one name, & I think she got tired of correcting people & such, so she SEemed to sometimes STOP using the ANNE, also saying her name was Wendy. I guess I picked up on that, & would drop the Anne too! I feel very ashamed of that now! I would call her my Wendy, but No, she’s my Wendy-Anne! A very beautiful name, for a very strong & beautiful woman!
