Holiday Road Trip to spain?
Normally over the past few years, we just did not have the time to take a family vacation for a number of reasons, but we have begun to plan for next year already. One of the reasons is that to be honest our family holidays always resemble something the Griswold family (from National Lampoon films) would have embarked upon.
This is my favourite track from National Lampoon’s vacation
Holiday Road
Mark (or Clark as he should be addressed) being the husband who try’s to make things as fun as possible, always ends up getting it wrong (Bless him).
I am always trying to control everything to ensure we all arrive everywhere on time, when everyone else has different holiday agendas, and the kids well just being kids wanting their own fun.
We want to break the mould next year and venture out to Spain. It is a long way from what we’re used to, as we are so typically British and spend our time at UK destinations normally.
When we do go abroad we are typically British over packing, complaining it is too hot, and guarding our sun loungers with our life.
Next year we are looking at going to Barcelona, we are geared up and ready to go (albeit too soon ), we seem to have the same thoughts and feelings on this interesting holiday destination.
The Spanish Holiday Destination
BARCELONA
Barcelona is great destination for the family; it pretty much ticks every box on our vacation list, well definitely on mine.
Some Places we want to visit
Barcelona has culture and plenty of fun family things to do. Our list of top activities to do when we get there are below.
The Barcelona Cathedral
Gothic Barcelona Cathedral is one of the top must do attractions in Barcelona, which is based in the old town. I really will enjoy this however if my boys begin to yawn and create, ladies you know what I mean I think I will just take myself off. I am only joking they can take off.
The Magic Fountain of Montjuic

This is a specular sight displaying lights, music, motion and colour and according to my sources acrobatics. Can you imagine what it will be like, I cannot wait to see how this display looks?
The Barceloneta beach
This beach is really close to Barcelona’s centre. Apparently, you can walk to this beach but it can take some time depending on where you are. However, we have also discussed getting ourselves a hire car, which I will provide a link to because it is hard to find a good reliable company.
In addition, the beach can become quite busy during the peak season between June and September but there is another beach close by called Icària, which I would happily settle for. I will pretty much do anything to go building sand castles just like us British folk love to do!
Now Barcelona is a top quality destination, yet there are neighbouring cities that are only a short drive away.
We want to go to Portaventura, which is about 1hour and 20 minutes away from Barcelona in Salou. If this turns out anything like the poor Griswold’s adventure to Wally World I may cry!.
Costa Brava Water Park
This water park has plenty of adventurous slides and relaxing family lagoon areas. I will be ensuring my husband’s trunks stay on this time, the last time we went the poor man had the wedgie from hell from the waterslide, he was in a great deal of pain( trying hard not to laugh again).
On top of all of this we intend to travel to as many neighbouring destinations as possible, still keeping it within our budget. I have taken a look into the travel costs for whilst we are there, to be honest it looks like we will be driving. Now obviously as we cannot take our own car, the decision has been made to get a hire car company in spain.
You don’t want this to happen with your hire car when you are away!
For now Adiós! (Thats is about as good as my spanish gets).

Would love to visit Barcelona. My parents live near Seville, we drove down when Monkey was 3 months old, would love to do it again that way when he’s a bit older.
I visited Barcelona when I was about 10 years old and still remember buying my first pair of espadrilles there. It was one place where my mum, dad and my two sisters all went as a family and got on!
This sounds like a lovely plan. We haven’t had a family holiday for a few years Our kids get so car sick that a road trip is out of the question for us. But if we can scrimp and save enough we would love to take the children to Lapland next Christmas. I’ve been to Salou and it’s lovely x
A few people have said Salou is nice especially for families. Lapland sounds great.I would love to do a tour of America, slightly ambitious and expensive though!
I suppose I am fortunate that none of us get car sick, it must be a nightmare travelling. I used to work in a Primary School and we had to have buckets galore for the kids with Road sickness.
I find driving scary at the best of times 😀 Let alone embarking on an adventure like this. But how exciting!! xx
I know I also find driving scary at times but my husband loves it so he is going to drive. We can’t wait to head off to spain next year it is about time we have a great family holiday.
The LEGOLAND Florida theme park looks really fun for us, we grew up with LEGOS so we are eager to visit and see all the wonderful LEGO Models.
