What do children see on their way to school?

Through a Child’s eyes

download

This week when walking to school with my youngest son Jake, I decided to do something a little different with him. I have been thinking what would it be like to see how Jake views the world around us on the school walk.We walk  to school most days and discuss so many topics on the way, I knew It would be easy to get him on board taking pictures during our school run.

We generally set off at 07.50 hours and it takes about 25 minutes to get to his school, this is great because we love to walk it’s not only a good time for talking to each other but its also great for his health.

So here are a few pictures that Jake has taken using my mobile phone whilst walking to school on a not so sunny day, we still made the best of it though.

The Gorilla in the garden

What did you see today

This picture is rather interesting. A neighbour of mine has placed a rather large Gorilla outside of their house. The funny thing about this is it used to be my husbands house before his mother sold it and moved to a new area a few years ago. This is the first place Jake wanted to take a picture because he knows the house means a lot to his dad. We also think this is funny because not many people can boast that they have a Gorilla in their garden.

The Local Church

Jake spotted the local church in our area and wanted to stop and photograph this. The lovely thing about this church is his grandparents actually got married here when they were only 17 years old. Jake always stops and talks about this church,as he has heard the story from his dad about a thousand times and he finds it brilliant to know the history of his family.

The Busy Road

The main road which is very busy on a morning, we live quite close to Leeds city centre and the White Rose Shopping Centre and this road gets so busy, Jake thought this might be interesting for you all to see (I have no idea why).

The Cheapest Shop in Town

What did you see today

This is a shop all the school children in our area go to before and after school. My eldest used to stop at this shop all the time, and over the years the kids have named it CHEAPOS.  Its a lovely little shop and the owner treats the children lovely when they go in and is always cheerful and smiling, which is rare to find nowadays. This is why the whole community still go here after years of this place being open.

The Busy Junction

This is one of the busiest Junctions near our house, and another reason why I like to walk Jake to school. I have drilled it into him that under no circumstances should he ever cross like the kids are doing in this picture. He wanted to take a picture of this because he knows how important it is to stay safe on his way to school. The roads we cross are very busy main roads, we thought highlighting the dangers we see may be a good thing.

Did Jake enjoy this task?

Jake actually enjoyed taking these photos, although they were taken on a rainy day they still highlight what he finds interesting on his way to school. I think it’s important to understand and see through a childs eyes and listen to what they have to say about things they find interesting.

Eye Health Information

I also think its a great idea to have your children’s eyesight checked, eye health is really important. Jake wears glasses because he gets headaches when reading and writing and using the computer. We discovered this a few years ago, luckily this is now improving and helping with his concentration. If you would like more information about eye health and check ups click  here.

We will be doing this again because it was actually quite fun, I am sure some of the pictures will get better once we get out of this rainy period and get some lovely white snow.

Now What did you see today?

It is really random isn’t it, but I suppose it makes their garden totally unique. I don’t think I will be putting one in it would scare the heck out of me during these winter nights.

Such a good idea! Sometimes we forget how a child sees the world. This is a great reminder to look at the world through their eyes. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Kids always see things quite different to the way you do. Got to say I have a smile at some of the things great grand-children say – they really see thing different to the way I do. Not worse or better, just different

Kids quite rightly see things in a far better way than most adults. When taking these pictures he made everything seem so bright the way he spoke about them with such enthusiasm. I must say it really is a great idea and lovely to do through out the seasons.

What a fun way to make an ordinary walk to school special! My daughter loves taking pictures but I’m always nervous about sharing my camera since she dropped the last one! lol

It is a great way to walk to school, we had so much fun and we are going to do this again. You daughter sounds like she would really enjoy it, maybe you could buy a cheap throw away camera, they still beat modern technology for durability.
