Tips for Creating a More Sociable Kitchen Space

July 14, 2021 | Leave a Comment

For many people, the kitchen is about much more than cooking and eating. Instead, it’s a social space; it’s about family and having a good time with the people closest to you. But if your kitchen is not yet living up to those expectations, there are things you can do to change it.

We’re going to discuss some of the most worthwhile changes to implement if you’re looking to create a more sociable kitchen space. Of course, every kitchen is unique but the ideas we’re about to discuss below will help you to make a sociable kitchen you can all enjoy. So read on to find out more.

Create an Island You Can Gather Around

First of all, you should think about whether your kitchen can accommodate an island. This is a very popular option for many people as it gives your kitchen a center of gravity. It’ll be the thing that people instinctively gather around and converse around in social situations. You can add some barstools to make it easier for people to sit around the island and socialize with one another as well. But that’s up to you.

Maintain Practicality

One thing that you should try to get right is practicality. After all, you want the kitchen to be a space in the home that’s used by your whole family. You don’t want it to be a ‘look but don’t touch’ kind of space. So make sure it’s accessible and inviting to the whole family because that’s what’s going to make it a space that everyone feels able to enjoy. So when putting new designs in place, don’t lose sight of practicality.

Keep the Space as Open as Possible

It’s a good idea to keep the kitchen and dining space as open as possible. It’s rarely a good idea to create two separate rooms; especially if you can join them together and create one much larger space. It feels quite old-fashioned and outdated to have a kitchen and a separate dining room. And it’s much easier for you and your family to enjoy the space as a social setting if it’s all part of one open and continuous space.

Sociable kitchen – Open Out Into the Garden

Many kitchens are connected to the home’s garden, and if the same is true for yours, you should make the most of that fact. By having a garden that connects to the kitchen, you can more easily open out the kitchen onto the garden and make the most of both of these spaces. This is particularly useful during the summer months when the weather is good and you want to dine outside more often.

Add a Skylight if Possible

If you want the kitchen to be a truly sociable space, you need to make the most of natural light. No one wants to congregate and socialize in a space that’s dark. So by letting in more natural light via bespoke skylights or other means, you can make sure that the space feels open and inviting throughout the day. You can then put the right electrical lighting solutions in place for the nighttime after the sun has gone down. You can purchase roof lights from reputable suppliers like Tuffx.

Optimize Your Storage Space

It’s hard for a kitchen to be truly sociable if the storage space isn’t adequate. You don’t want all of your kitchen items to be spilling out onto the kitchen countertops. But that’s what’ll happen if you don’t organize and optimize your storage space properly. So that’s certainly something for you to consider and work on if it’s currently a problem in your kitchen. Clutter should be avoided at all costs if you want to create a social space that everyone can enjoy.

Sociable kitchen – Add a Variety of Seating Options

Adding a wider variety of seating options will definitely be necessary if you want to make your kitchen a more social space. Of course, you’ll need seating at the dining table. But you might also want to add a bench with cushions on the perimeter of one of the walls. This allows people to sit when they just want to socialize or talk to the person who’s cooking. It simply adds another option to the room.

As you can see, there are lots of things you can do if you’re serious about creating a sociable kitchen that you, your friends and visitors all enjoy making use of. With these changes and the right implementation, your kitchen can be the go-to social hub in your home for many years to come.
