Having just moved into a small two-bedroom flat on the 5th floor I was happy to know I had movers bringing all our furniture from storage so that I wouldn’t need to get involved in any heavy lifting.
Big Sofa, Small Doorway
The doorway into our flat is in a narrow corner with a wall only a few feet opposite the door. I was concerned our large L shape 5-seater sofa wouldn’t fit.
If it wouldn’t fit, I would have to find some quick ship furniture to get a replacement sofa.
When you buy a sofa, you do think about how it will fit into your current lounge area, but not how it will fit into the lounge of your next how!
Sectional and Modular Designs
Fortunately, modern sofas are built-in sectional and modular designs that mean you can take them apart for easier movement and sometimes put them back together in different formations.
The first problem with moving our sofa could have been getting it into the elevator which only fits about 6 people if everyone is holding their breath!
Fortunately, our sofa pulls apart into six pieces. At one end is a recliner chair, followed by a narrow section with two drink holders and a compartment for storing remotes, magazines, etc. Then comes the curved corner piece, followed by two single seats, and finally a long single seat that you can lie on.
When the sofa was being packed at our old address, the back of the corner piece was removed, otherwise, that never would have gotten through the door.
Every piece was successfully squeezed through the doorway until we came to the final long single seat. It is about two meters long, and with the packaging around it, we just couldn’t twist it any way that was going to allow it to fit through the doorway.
We removed all the packing, but even though the sofa is quite soft, we still couldn’t squeeze it through the door!
That’s when I asked if the back came off that piece too. Fortunately, it did. The back slants backward at an angle and without it, the single-seat just managed to fit through the doorway.
This Lounge wasn’t designed for a big Sofa
Fitting it all together into our small lounge wasn’t difficult, however with three doors in the room, and only one wall without a door we didn’t have any choice about where to place it.
It has meant that the corner where our corner piece sits is where the TV aerial socket and an electrical wall socket are located.
It seems that previous tenants had their television in that corner. Having this large sofa has meant we have an electrical wall socket that isn’t used, and we needed to install an aerial cable above one of the doors and run it along the top and side of the doorframe, then along the floor towards our television.
If our sofa didn’t come in sections, we never would have gotten into the flat. Even a three-seater sofa wouldn’t fit through the front door because of the wall opposite.
But of course, the luxury provided by a comfy sofa where you can lie full length, or even use as an extra bed for visitors, is not something you want to get rid of too easily.
