Rachel Marsden – Mr Brennan’s class 1987
Look at my old school report.
Whilst my Mum and Dad were having a clear out at their house, they came across my old school report, the same week my son Jake also brought his school report home.
My son’s school report was spread over 4 pages with different sections and levels achieved for each subject, targets set for the next term and even a message from the Headteacher with a bright smiley face sticker at the bottom.
In comparison it made mine look so simple and made me think just how easy it was for Teachers to put a report together back in 1987.I feel for teachers now with so much red tape and set targets they have to include.
What is wrong with the simple, honest and personal report from the 1980’s, I would much prefer that style to the new computerised reports that all our children bring home now from school.
What do you think, are old reports the way to go?
Bring back Retro Reports

LOL I often get mine out too and have a chuckle! Luckily mine were always good as I was a shy bairn and kept out of trouble! I always remember my parents saying to me ‘Enjoy your school days as they are the best days of your life’ and looking back I can agree. I worked hard and had a lovely group of friends at school No work/family/money worries – and then I left……
I have a report exactly like that! We must be about the same age
Could not agree more. Must go find my old ones. 🙂
After reading your post I went into my loft and hunted out mine – I must admit I prefer reading my personal handwritten reports from the 80s than my children’s now. There reports are all printed off from a computed and with cut and paste statements! Not so personal!
I know Tracy at least we had some personal touch to ours. Kids these days really do miss out on a lot of the nice things we received. Thank you for the comment and I am really glad it’s encouraged you to get yours out too, how funny is t reading them now.
My mom recently had a major sort out and gave all my old reports. They gave me a proper giggle. I totally agree they were so much more personal and mine had lovely little asides about the things I did. Today they are all about the targets reached or to be reached. Much prefer the old style.
I don’t mind if it is written or typed I just wish they would tell it as it is like they used to on my report. Now every child is a delight – yer right!
I don’t have any of my old reports, but they pretty much exactly the same as yours!
I agree with what you’re saying. I’d much rather know whether they’re happy, have friends, work hard and do their best than know exactly where they stand in the league tables.
