Splatoon Review
Splatoon is Nintendo’s first venture into the massive genre of Shooters and did they ever make a ‘Splat’ with Splatoon! Splatoon is a colourful shooter where the player assumes the role of an Inkling, humanoid Squids which can turn into their more primordial form of squid. This provides a beginner friendly play style with extreme depth and strategy hidden beneath the inky mess of each exhilarating match!
Inkopolis
Inkopolis is the social hub of Splatoon where Inklings gather via Miiverse in order check out others ‘Fresh’ styles and shop till you drop!
First of all, in the bottom right of this City is the Amiibo Zone where the three Splatoon Amiibos, Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl and the Triple pack only Inkling Squid (Available from May 29th) Amiibos can be activated! (We’ll get into their use later)
There is also the Battle Dojo, the Couch Co-op area where you compete to pop the most balloons whilst stopping the opponent by ‘Splatting’ them with the one with the most points winning! This mode is played on Gamepad and Screen.
Booyah Base is the shopping zone with four areas. Cooler heads, a Hat store run by Annie the Sea Anemone and Moe the Clown Fish, Jelly Fresh, a Shirt store run by Jelonzo the Jellyfish and Shrimp Kicks, a Shoe store run by Crusty Sean, a Shrimp! These three stores run off the rule of you have to be at least level four ‘Freshness’ in order to purchase. Finally Ammo Knights, the weapon store run by Sheldon, the Horseshoe Crab, who sells Weapon sets starting from Level 1 but unlocking more each level you progress. There is also a secret Courier style store which hasn’t been fully realized as you need Sea Urchins for half of it. (Hint: The tutorial hints to it =)
Each weapon set includes one Main, Sub and Special weapons in order to herald the Inkopolis! (Release the Kraken!)
Finally, the two most important areas, the small grate with Captain Cuttlefish who leads the assault against the Octarians, the Squids 100 year old rivals after the Great turf war with you, agent 3, as the flag bearer! (Wonder about Agents 1&2?) Amiibos link to this as you can replay levels with either the Roller with Inkling Boy, Splat Charger with Inkling Girl and Kraken or Time Attack with Inkling Squid! For doing these you unlock special Weapons, armour sets and mini games such as Squid Beatz for waiting in lobbies and for fun! These are extremely fun and often challenging with worthy rewards! In my personal opinion, the best use of Amiibo’s so far!
Secondly is Inkopolis tower, the most famous Landmark in Inkopolis! This is the Multiplayer lobby which currently at launch includes Regular battle, or turf wars as it basically means, which pits you in not a game of ‘Splatting’ but claiming turf with your colour ink! You can only shoot ink in human form but are near invisible and regens ink and swims at 2x speed in Squid form. This causes many strategy’s to formulate and the lack of Voice Chat doesn’t matter as Super Jumps (Teleportation to other players on your team) allow people to gauge tactics along with the real time map! Further strategies include peoples Weapon of Choice. The Splatter Shot is a Mid-Range gun which fires in front and is good at both Killing and Inking! The Ink Roller is a wide spread constant attack which is amazing and Inking and mediocre at killing and is the best weapon for Turf wars. It has a single ranged shot at the start of a roll. Finally, the Splat Charger is a long range sniper style gun which charges then fires in a straight line, killing all in its sight. This is the most advanced weapon and is Amazing in Killing but not Inking.
There’s also a mode soon to be unlocked when many players reach Level 10 called Ranked Battles. These are intense matches with depth and strategy galore With the First Mode being Splat Zones where you fight over a single spot of land on the map. There will be more modes released in free updates going on with more maps, weapons, Fashion and Modes! There are 5 maps at launch which Cycle between two every Four hours. This is announced by Inkopolis Famous Stars, the Squid Sisters. This is made up of Cali and Mari! They also host the Irregular ‘Splat Fest’ event with the first being June 20th through 21st which is Dogs vs Cats which is a global war! These reward Sea Urchins for Gear levelling!
However, Splatoon isn’t without its flaws. For example, at launch there is only five maps, though each varied and fun, it can become repetitive. Furthermore, Rollers dominate the Multi player available at launch and finally, the single player bosses aren’t particularly hard except the final one, which is truly a blast!
This has been Jake from Umeandthekids who has been loving every minute of splatoon, signing out =)
RATING: 4.7/5 Fantastic =D
