Vtech kidizoom Action Cam Review – It’s like a Go-Pro for Kids

The Vtech Kidizoom Action Cam is a revolutionary video and image capture camera specifically designed for and aimed at kids. In this review we put the action cam through its paces and show you what you really get for your money at £49.99 in our Vtech Kidizoom Action Cam Review.

What is the Vtech Kidizoom Action Cam

The Vtech Kidizoom Action Cam is a child-friendly GoPro style Camcorder & Camera specifically designed for children. Anyone who uses a GoPro knows what fun you can have filming on the go with ease creating some really fun and interesting videos.

Generally, the GoPro is used by thrill seekers and extreme sports enthusiasts, however as great as the GoPro action cams are they also have quite a high price tag too. The cheapest GoPro hero action cam costs £249.99 and is not something you or I probably want to leave in the hands of our children just in case it gets damaged!

Action Cam Quality and Memory

The Vtech Action Cam has a photograph quality of 640 x 480, which isn’t so great. It’s similar to taking photographs with a 0.3 megapixel camera.

Now, the video quality capture is far better and this device if purchased would probably be used for this reason far more often. You can set the quality of the Action Cam to suit your personal needs.

• 640 x 240 (This is the high quality setting)
• Default Resolution is 320 x 240
• Lowest Setting 160 x 120 (Which is a good setting if you don’t have an expandable memory card)

The Vtech Kidizoom action cam has 128mb internal memory which could be better! Vtech come on enhance this please! It is expandable but I personally hate having to buy additional memory cards for devices straight out of the box. We didn’t have a spare SD card lying around the house so our footage has been recorded in the 320 x 240 setting to squeeze as much footage out as possible.

Vtech do state that the internal memory is only 128mb, so, unlike me maybe you should purchase a Micro SD card first. I have listed a few expandable Micro SD cards below which I think are great value.

  (Note this is an affiliate link) but you can pick them up from as little as £7.69 upwards for a 32gb card. That would provide you with at least a two hours worth of recording in highest quality 640 x 480 video resolution mode.

With the amount of devices requiring expandable memory these days, I have already ordered a few to keep in stock at home for future use.

Image & Video Formats

• It’s also worth noting that the camera only saves images in JPG format and videos in AVI.

All weather Action Camera

The Vtech Action Cam is made for use in a similar way to the Gopro allowing children to capture their indoor and outdoor activities with ease regardless of weather conditions. This is due to the Kidizoom Action Camera being waterproof when you add the waterproof accessories that come with it when you purchase.

The Kidizoom camera is known for being quite robust from the Vtech range. This Action Cam is also quite chunky and when it was accidentally dropped by accident by my nephew it didn’t break and seems to be working as normal.

Kidizoom Action Stop-Mo and Time Lapse functions

The Vtech Action Cam can can also be used as a personal camera to take pictures of whatever your child feels like. They can also add cartoon effects to their saved photos or even distort the pictures for even more fun! The features include:

• Add photo effects and create stop motion videos.
• Time-lapse recording to capture selfie action shots at intervals.

Additional Features

I am impressed by the ability to create fun stop motion movies that even have a selection of background music to choose from (The kids could have real fun with this). A perfect introduction for kids to filming and learning video and photo editing.

If stunts get too exhausting, kids can take a break to play one of the three games Pre-loaded onto the Kidizoom action cam. The games are listed below:

The Action cam is perfect for small hands as already proven it is very durable and quite easy to use. The Vtech Action Cam comes complete with its own accessories to use on your various adventures.

So, once you know when you purchase this product, unless you break any of the accessories you should have everything you already need.

Testing the Kidizoom Action Cam

I decided the best way to test the Vtech Kidizoom Action Cam would be by kids to get their honest feedback and to see if they could master this all by themselves. Now, the cam is aimed at children between the ages of 5 years to 12 years of age. I don’t understand the age cap because I know lots of older kid’s who would probably use this device if they had the chance.

Jake aged 13, Lydia aged 12 and Riley aged 9 helped me assemble the Kidizoom action cam placing it on the stunt scooter. I normally leave the assembly of parts to my husband, but with him at work, it was left for me to attempt to fix the Kidizoom camera to the handlebars of the scooter.

Test 1. Here is a video shot in our kitchen it’s a close up of Mia our Cat.

I was quite shocked at how easy the cam attached to the scooter and stayed perfectly in place. The Cam didn’t shake too much or come loose even when my nephew Riley was using the cam whilst he was charging around the block on the stunt scooter. I was pretty impressed that with teamwork, the trio mastered the Kidizoom and made this video showing footage using the Action Cam on their scooter each taking it in turn to produce a video.

Test 2. In the following Video the Vtech actually moves during filming whilst attached to the handlebars of the Scooter. This may have been because I didn’t tighten it enough!

I will say that my son who has dyspraxia struggled slightly when I asked him to re-attach the device after a bit of charging mid-way. He was determined to attach it and he managed it, so well done Jake.

Test 3. In this video the kids get it spot on!

Even though we were incredibly impressed with how easy it was to film with the Action Cam and its chunky buttons, we still felt we needed to test Vtech’s claims you can use it under water. By adding the protective waterproof case we submerged the Kidizoom into a sink full of bubbly water and you can see the recorded results in the video below.

At only £49.99, the Vtech Kidizoom action Cam, is far better value than I expected, ok it’s not quite a GoPro as far as cam quality goes, but it’s a fraction of the price. I can leave the kids to film away and take pictures knowing it is robust enough to stand up to kids using it without worrying it will get broken. Playing outdoors has just got more fun for these 3!
