The times we have with our children are so precious. 10 Mother and Son Date Night Ideas

I grew up in a house full of girls so when I first found out that I was going to give birth to a little boy  I was quite intrigued to see how I would cope. I didn’t really fear the thought of not knowing what to do to entertain them, but I was slightly apprehensive as to how they would find my style of parenting.

Lucky, my children have really grown into wonderful young men and they often speak to me about things they loved doing with me and still do to be honest.

That doesn’t mean we haven’t had our ups and downs and thinking back I wish I had spent even more time with them on either a one to one basis or as a family. When I was growing up all I played with was Care bears, Barbie Dolls, and general girly things.

Now my house is full of gaming devices, superheroes and star wars toys. This doesn’t stop me from trying to entertain my boys, but it does make things a little more difficult, I mean who wants to hear Ironman sounding like a girl when we play figures? “Well, to be honest, I don’t think it really matters that much”.

So, over the years, I have adapted and found some really fun Mother and Son Date Night Ideas my boys have loved and I am sure yours will too.

1 – Build with Lego. If you are into Lego then why not? We often sit and build Lego sets and create some pretty wacky Ideas merely from used or old bricks. Sometimes we even buy the latest Lego sets and sit for hours building them. Not only do you have a great toy to play with at the end, but we often have a great sense of achievement after using teamwork and our building skills.

2 – Kitchen Fun. As part of your Mother and Son date night, you are going to need food, right? Why not get them in the Kitchen and create some wonderful snacks. If you want some really fun ideas here are 5 Kid Friendly Healthy Recipe Cards, How to Create CakePops or How to make Smores… We all know boys love getting messy so a chocolate cake would probably go down nicely too.

3 – Get Active. If your date night is indoors then why not try indoor football, bowling or golf or Indoor Go Karting. If you want to take them outdoors, you could go to a laser zone, walking in the woods, here is another 8 totally fun free outdoor activities they will love! Just remember that boys love to get hands on and dirty, so anything from running to walking will give you plenty of quality time together to chat and have fun. You can even check out our Vtech Kidizoom Action Cam Review to record your Mother and Son Date Night.

4 – A trip to a local Restaurant. My boys love to eat! So getting them to go to a restaurant is quite an easy task. You often get to talk about things you have done throughout the week. I find special trips like these make us closer and I often find out things they are enjoying in life right now.

5 – A Movie Night. Ok, so you’re a mum! I get that… whatever you do, don’t put on something like Bridget Jones. Instead why not fill a bucket of popcorn up and make ice cream delights. Get an action packed movie or a flick hat will make them laugh and cuddle up on your mother and son date night in front of your own TV. Here is how I prepare movie night treats and spend next to nothing.

7 – Play a video game. Boys love to play their games. I personally love to get the Wii U out because of the interaction and play games like Mario Cart. This encourages us to bounce around and have fun. Another really great video game we love to use is the Just Dance series. Just make sure you both are going to have fun with your mother and son bonding time.

8 – Make and Craft. It’s amazing what you can do with just a piece of paper. I find making boys favourite characters out of paper templates is really, really cool. If you have no idea what I am talking about I wrote this Papercraft Guide to show you how easy it is to learn. You could male masks, animals and pretty much anything your boys are into and best of all it costs you nothing more than a little ink and glue.

9 – Build a Home Den. This one is always fun. Grab a few simple items, like covers and a duvet, which can be placed over a couple of chairs and you have the start of an awesome cosy den. You could then provide the sweeties and maybe even link it all in with your movie night. We have done this so many times and we always seem to have plenty of fun.

10 – Play a Board Game. There are a vast amount of board games that are seriously good fun. Do you remember the amount of fun you had growing up playing board games with your parents. These days kids seem to get caught up in online gaming. The principle is the same but provide your child with special drinks and snacks and the night becomes so much fun. The only tip I would give you here is “Don’t always play to win” ha! One game I used to love and still play with the boys is Monopoly, it’s just seriously competitive and fun.

What is you favourite way to spend quality time with your son?
