How to restart your fitness routine after having kids

March 23, 2022 | Leave a Comment

It’s perfectly normal for your whole life to be put on hold when you have kids, but it’s important to take care of yourself as well as your little ones. However, once your children have grown up a bit, it’s difficult to carry on putting off your return to the gym. While a crying baby is a perfect excuse, a child who is about to start school doesn’t require your undivided focus non-stop.

If you’ve been struggling to get back into working out since your children started demanding most of your attention, then this blog is for you. It will give you all the tips you need to ease back into your fitness routine now that you have a bit more time on your hands.

Get the support you need

Getting fit doesn’t have to be a solo activity, so make sure you have the help you need to do it right. Top personal trainers in London can work with you to set realistic goals, allowing you to safely and effectively build your level of fitness over the course of a few months or even a year. It’s always best to get an assessment from a professional after a long break from exercise, as it can be hard to judge what kinds of exercises will be too much for you at your current level of fitness. Lots of people assume that personal trainers are just for bodybuilders or marathon runners, but anyone can benefit from their support, so go ahead and reach out.

Fitness Routine – Start slow

It’s important to keep your new workout routines as manageable as possible. Start by exercising on a couple of days per week and gradually build your schedule into something more regular when you feel comfortable doing so. Don’t jump into anything too adventurous and stick to familiar exercises like jogging, bodyweight exercises and stretching.

Fitness Routine – Get the family involved

If you’re finding it hard to get away and take some time for yourself to exercise, make it a family activity. Children that are of school age can get involved with cycling on the beach or swimming, so don’t be afraid to invite them along. They might be reluctant at first, but exercise is important for children and adults of all ages and they’re bound to start having fun once they get started.

Fitness Routine – Find something you enjoy

The hardest part about exercising is finding an activity that brings you joy. It’s hard to keep up with a routine when you hate every moment of it, so spend some time working out what types of exercise are best suited to your tastes. If you don’t enjoy going to the gym, try an outdoor activity like rock climbing or hiking. On the other hand, many people are put off by bad weather but love playing team sports. In these cases, something like volleyball or badminton might work well.

The type of exercise you do and when you do it doesn’t really matter but keeping active even when you have kids is crucial to your overall wellbeing.
