If you have your own gym at home, it can be hard to decide what equipment you should invest in. If you are working on a tight budget then maybe you are looking for ways that you can cut costs, which equipment you should splash out on and which equipment you can bargain shop for. Well, here is some advice on what pieces of equipment are well worth investing in.
Squat rack
Open top power racks are an essential piece of equipment for any home gym. They are versatile and enable you to do a great range of workouts that you would not be able to without them. If you are trying to keep your gym small or do not want to purchase too many big pieces of equipment, then the first thing you should consider is a squat rack.
Barbell and weights
A squat rack is not much use with a barbell and weights to go with it. These can also be used on their own and will help enhance your usual workout routine by adding a little weight to help boost your strength. Make sure you purchase a range of weights so you can tailor each workout exactly to your specifications and your abilities.
Weight Bench
There are plenty of exercises you can only do with a weight bench and to make sure you are doing it properly and your body is positioned correctly then you should invest in a quality weight bench that provides all the necessary support.
Dumbbells and kettlebells
Smaller equipment like dumbbells is great for a quick workout or perfect if you do not have the space to dedicate a whole room for your home gym. They can be easily stored away and brought out when you want to use them. By simply incorporating a kettlebell into your squats or lunges, you can massively improve the efficiency of your workout. You can even get adjustable dumbbells if you do not have the space to store a full set.
Gym equipment – Resistance bands
Resistance bands are small and lightweight which makes them ideal for on-the-go workouts or travelling. They take up virtually no space and are really effective in boosting your exercise without increasing the pressure on your joints. They can also be used in your warmup routine to prevent muscle cramps and soreness.
Yoga mat
A yoga mat serves many functions and is not just for yoga or Pilates. They can protect your joints during strength training, prevent injuries and help maintain good alignment whilst your exercise. Check for a non-slip yoga mat with plenty of support and cushioning.
Gym equipment – Pull-up bar
A pull-up bar that fits into a doorway is perfect for someone with limited space such as those living in an apartment. It takes up no space whatsoever and it is so easy to install yourself – but make sure you do it properly and it is secure otherwise you may find yourself with a serious injury if it falls whilst you are using it.
